Student Life
What makes VIPER distinctive is the way intellectual life and community life naturally reinforce one another. Because students come from different disciplines but share broad interests in energy, science, engineering, and society, conversations often move easily across fields. It is common for a casual conversation to shift from research to public policy, or from coursework to broader questions about where a field is headed. That kind of interdisciplinary curiosity is one of the defining features of the program. Additionally, students often ask each other for advice on classes, research, internships, and future plans; and more often than not, someone in VIPER knows exactly who to connect them with. The result is a culture where students are curious, collaborative, and genuinely invested in one another’s growth.
VIPER Student Board
The VIPER Student Board (VSB) plays a central role in shaping student life within the program. Our goal is to create opportunities for deeper connection across class years, strengthen relationships between current students and alumni, and help make VIPER feel deeply supportive and welcoming.
VSB helps support this environment through a wide range of academic and professional programming. These events include alumni career mentorship panels, conversations about graduate school and research, major advising sessions, and fellowship information sessions featuring students who have received awards such as the Goldwater, Fulbright, NSF GRFP, Luce, and Thouron. VSB also supports student participation in conferences (such as the Princeton Energy Conference and the Wharton Energy & Climate Conference) and creates spaces where students can learn from one another’s experiences.
Hanging Out & Forming Bonds
Other events are meant to create the kind of everyday community that makes a demanding program feel sustainable: regular study breaks, museum outings into the city, trips to the Morris Arboretum, movie and game nights, ice skating, potlucks, and other gatherings that bring students together. These experiences give students the chance to form friendships across class years and create the kind of connections that make the program feel like home.
Meet Your VIPER House
One of the clearest expressions of that shared identity is the VIPER House System. Each incoming class is sorted into one of four houses (Geothermal, Solar, Wind, or Hydroelectric) and students remain part of that house throughout their time in VIPER and beyond graduation. The House System creates a sense of continuity across class years and gives students another way to connect, participate, and build tradition together over time.

"Learning specifically about what energy research is all about, as well as interacting with my classmates, all bubbling with innovative ideas and infectious excitement about energy, is my favorite part of VIPER."
- Asaph Lee (VIPER '22)
Mentorship
Mentorship in VIPER is both intentional and organic. Some of it happens through formal programming, such as advising events and alumni panels, but much of it develops naturally through friendships, shared classes, research conversations, and time spent together at events. Students regularly turn to one another for perspective, whether they are exploring research opportunities, thinking about graduate school, or simply trying to figure out life at Penn. Those relationships often grow into lasting friendships, collaborations and a strong sense of mutual investment in one another’s success.
Alumni Connections
That continuity extends well beyond Penn. VIPER’s alumni network remains deeply engaged with the program, and current students benefit from that connection in meaningful ways. Each year, VIPER Day brings students and alumni together to reflect on their journeys, exchange advice, and reconnect as a community. VIPER alumni now work across an impressive range of fields, from semiconductor research and grid modernization to AI for energy efficiency, battery manufacturing, sustainable investing, and beyond. Their continued involvement gives current students a powerful sense of what is possible and reinforces the idea that a VIPER education can lead in many exciting directions.
Shared Passions, Lasting Bonds
At its core, student life in VIPER is defined by a rare combination of rigor, breadth, and closeness. Students are challenged to think across disciplines and pursue ambitious goals, but they do so in a community where people know and support one another, and remain connected long after graduation. For many students, that combination becomes one of the most defining parts of their Penn experience.
